AMD Drops Desktop Processor Prices by 47%

Folks if you are planning to buy a Desktop PC, and if like AMD over Intel, there couldn't be better news than this. AMD has almost halved the prices of its processors used in desktop. AMD has two lines of processors for mainstream PC users - 939 Pin Socket & AM2 Socket. AM2 is the new one, but I suggest you to go with 939 pin Socket to get the price-performance advantage.

India Blogging Ban Lifted After Several Days

Now you all can view this page and many more with blogspot.com domain at you the comfort of your home.

According to Indian government officials, the block on all blog sites was a "technological error" that is being remedied. Blocks on certain web sites have been put into place because of "extremely derogatory references to Islam." A fear of sectarian violence over the "derogatory references" was the reason behind the block. Another theory is that the ban on blogs would clamp down on communication lines between terrorists.

Google PhoneBook

Use Google if you want to look up a phonebook listing for someone who lives in the United States. Just enter "phonebook:" prior to a person's name and a city, state, or zip code in the standard web search box. Then hit the ENTER key or click the "Google Search" button.

If you have easy access to the web, Google's phonebook feature can be more convenient than your local phonebook and more extensive too. World's Slimmest Comes to India

Samsung India has unleashed a new model series called Ultra Edition. The three phones included in this new series are:

The World's Slimmest Bar Phone - Samsung X820 also called Ultra Edition 6.9. This phone has a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and a 2 megapixel camera. Its technological drawbacks may be the smaller size and poorer 176x220 pixel resolution of the 1.9" 262K color display, or the lack of auto focus for the camera and the lack of a memory card slot for memory expansion, but it makes up for all of those with its sheer size and weight - it's only 6.9 mm thick and weighs the impressive 66 g.

World's Slimmest 3 Megapixel Slider - Samsung D900 also called Ultra Edition 12.9. It should impress the potential buyers with a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, a 3 megapixel camera, CIF (352 x 288) resolution video recording, a 2.1" 240x320 pixel 262K color TFT display, 80MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot.

The World's Slimmest Clamshell - Samsung D830 also called Ultra Edition 9.9. The new flip phone would feature tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, a 2 megapixel camera with auto focus, a large 2.3" 320x240 pixels 262K color TFT display, a small 1-line external monochrome display, 80MB internal memory and a microSD memory slot at the meager weight of 85 g.

The number 6.9, 12.9 and 9.9 represents the thickness in millimeters.

Replacement of Maruti ZEN

With in few months we will see Suzuki MR Wagon, which Maruti plans as the replacement of Zen. The new Zen will be the generation-old Suzuki MR Wagon and will be based on the Alto and Wagon-R platform. Maruti is expected to price the Suzuki MR Wagon between Rs 3 and 4 lakh and it will have a 1061 cc engine, pumping out 64 bhp.

To me it looks like a mini Innova, but thats just about its looks. Here is a picture to speak thousand words.

Being Blocked in India by India

Unfortunately India has joined China in censoring websites and on the directions of the Government of India, Indian ISPs (Spectranet, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Reliance Powersurfer, Airtel Broadband and Sify) have started censoring and blocking web sites and Blogspot and TypePad are the targets to begin with.

So much for the Worlds Largest DEMOCRACY and Fundamental Right to Free Speech and Expression. Rediff NEWS has covered this here - http://in.rediff.com/news/2006/jul/17blog.htm.

Speed-up Windows Shutdown

We have all tried various ways to speed-up Windows start-up time, here is a tool that does the closing ceremony quicker.

Delay in shutdown happens when third party, or even Microsoft applications have not properly cleaned up when exiting. Windows will keep trying to unload the profile until Windows finally decides that it can't and should shutdown. Even if you find the application causing the problem - it may be impossible to do anything about it.

This is why Microsoft released the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. This free utility automatically cleans up user profiles and prevents you from playing the timeout wait game.

You can download it from http://www.intelliadmin.com/profileclean.msi

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer

For all those, who have AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor under the bonnet, AMD has released a utility to improve some PC gaming video performance by bypassing Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction.

Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented.

The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core or multiple processor systems.

This utility can be downloaded from http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/TscSync.zip

Script# - Javascript from C#

This comes as a great help to developers, not very good with Javascript. Now we can write code in C# and it will be interpreted and compiled into JavaScript.

Essentially the Script# compiler is a C# compiler that generates Javascript instead of IL. A key driving goal of the design is to produce readable Javascript that you may have authored yourself, and would be ok to deploy into real apps.

More details can be found at http://www.nikhilk.net/ScriptSharpIntro.aspx.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

Though the final release is somewhere in 2008, this new framework from Microsoft packs enough punch to make all of us (developers) blink and think. Thers is a new developer community that focuses on the four new technologies included in the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and more.
  1. Windows Communication Foundation is Microsoft's unified framework for building secure, reliable, transacted, and interoperable distributed applications.
  2. Windows Presentation Foundation is the next-generation presentation sub-system for Windows. It provides developers and designers with a unified programming model for building rich Windows smart client user experiences that incorporate UI, media, and documents.
  3. Windows Workflow Foundation is the programming model, engine and tools for quickly building workflow enabled applications. WF radically enhances a developer’s ability to model and support business processes.
  4. Windows CardSpace enables users to provide their digital identities in a familiar, secure and easy way. In the physical world we use business cards, credit cards and membership cards. Online with CardSpace we use a variety of virtual cards to identify ourselves, each retrieving data from an identity provider. Don't struggle with usernames and passwords, just choose an information card!
